Modern trends in jewelry have taken a turn to the far limits of the imagination. Modern designers have produced some really unusual and even bizarre pieces of art. Here are a few examples of what is out there.
No one in a western country would think of wearing antlers around their neck as an adornment but for an African woman it might be completely reasonable and considered normal. These horns might also serve to keep away the advances of an unwelcome suitor.
Is Bigger Better?
A necklace is a common accessory for many women but generally a necklace begins at the neck and hangs a few inches below it. A really long necklace might reach down to the middle of the chest. But now innovative designers are breaking the rules and super large necklaces can reach down below the waist with bold designs. British designer Maria Frances Pepe has created a super large long gold necklace.
Thinking outside the box can produce some really interesting works of art. Rings generally are small round adornments attached to one of the fingers. But what if you let your imagination run wild and let the ring expand outside the comfort zone. Take this ring for example. It’s called “The Turtle in the Garden” by MrsDazo. The design “jumps” out of your hand and becomes a 3D big shape on your hand.
It is sure to be a conversation starter at the next party the woman wearing it will attend. But I suppose it would be hard to do the laundry while wearing this ring.
Diamond Dogs
There are more strange and wonderful ideas for jewelry but sometimes the strangest thing of all is who is wearing the gems. Here is a unique gift for man’s (or woman’s) best friend – Diamond earrings for your dog.
If you have extra budget, you can definitely surprise your true friend with a couple of these…
The Dark Side
Some people are happy campers who smile at everyone and always have a “good” day. They wear bright colored clothing and like to show their white teeth to everyone they meet. But others have a black, moody disposition, often in depression or other foul moods. They seem to always be looking at the dark side of life. What would their jewelry choice be? Well, Canadian jewelry designer Miju has just the thing. Here is her creation for the macabre minded. It is called ‘Dead Crow” and even features two red drop gems that resemble drops of blood.
For the environmentally conscious there is a line of jewelry that looks and feels politically correct. Holly Anne Mitchell uses recycled paper products to make bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and broaches. Mitchell uses expired coupons, comic strips, stock lists, crossword puzzles and even used sugar packets to make her line of environment friendly line of jewelry.
Living Jewelry
I thought I had seen just about everything a woman can wear around her neck but when I saw this I was pleasantly surprised. It is a tiny potted plant that you can wear around your neck. Dutch artist Lauri Poast uses terra cotta clay from Spain to hand-sculpt tiny pots in which she plants mosses and other succulent plants. Wear it in good health and don’t forget to water it daily.
I am sure there are more wild and wonderful ways to adorn a woman’s body that no one has thought of yet. The imagination is truly unlimited. But these are some of the innovations out there. Enjoy.

English: Necklace made from crochet lace, pearls, and sterling silver. Crochet worked in ecru no. 10 mercerized cotton thread. Silver wire in 16 gauge (clasp) and 26 gauge. Freshwater pearls in disc shape (green) and seed shape (green, brown, and champagne). Original design. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Name necklaces are currently one of the most popular types of necklace and have been for a few years. A short stroll down the street will reveal numerous women wearing a necklace with their name on it, usually in the form of a cursive plate. In fact, they are so popular that most women own one or name jewelry pieces. However, your name necklace can be personalized far beyond the traditional cursive plate made famous by celebrities and television shows. Here are some of the options that are available when personalizing your name necklace to be completely original.
Because name necklaces feature text, there are a wide variety of options to choose from. It is possible to choose from block print or cursive fonts. The name chosen can be in completely in capital or lower-case letters or completely in lower-case letters. The name can also be accented by some kind of decoration such as a star, flower or a butterfly. Finally, it is also possible to use your first name and middle name together if you have two names.
Name necklaces are not limited to the name of the wearer. It is possible to use the name of a loved one or put your name together with the name of your loved one. These necklaces tend have larger name plates and frequently sport decorations such as animals, hearts or some other symbol. They may also appear in the center of a large symbol such as a heart or inside a geometric shape such as an oval.
It is also possible to have yourname on a necklace in a cut-out format. This means that necklace is a solid plate and has the letters in the name cut completely through the metal. The same font options are available for these necklaces. Keep in mind that these necklaces are heavier than most due to the fact that they contain more metal.
In addition, name necklaces can be set with different types of stones. While it is possible to set precious stones such as diamonds or sapphires, it is common to use birthstones. Birthstones are popular because they frequently speak to the wearer in some way. Consequently, it is popular to display stones such as amethysts, turquoise and topaz on name jewelry. One option that will make a name necklace completely unique is to set the stones on a decoration such as a top the letter ‘I’ in a name, as the eye of an animal decoration such as a rabbit or as the middle of a flower.
Obviously, it is also possible to personalize your name necklace by using a unique metal. While most necklaces come in gold, silver and platinum, less common metals will make more of a statement and make your necklace unique.

One of the top trends right now is anything do it yourself. With social media blossoming, everyone is sharing their creative side. From wedding bouquets made out of fabric flowers to vintage style broaches made with crystal beads if you can imagine it you can create it. If you are itching for a creative endeavor consider making your own jewelry. Here are some quick ideas to get you going and the materials you can use to create your own fashion jewelry.
Start out with a simple necklace to get the feel for the style and patterns of color you like best. A great way to start is to go through a magazine and pull out images of necklaces that catch your eye. With the images in hand you will have an idea of what you need to gather to make your new piece of jewelry.
Some basic materials that you will need are:
- Jewelry chain
- Flat nosed pliers
- Ruler
- Metal nail file
- Twine or leather rope
- Decorative accents
Your materials will greatly affect the look of the necklace that you are making. If you are more free and easy and prefer to spend your days out riding horses you may prefer to work with earth tones and leather rope. If you are a city girl that likes to go shopping with the girls and play tennis on the weekends you may find you are drawn to more traditional elements like pearls and gold. If you like vintage inspired items dig through your own jewelry collection and see if there is an old piece that can be repurposed in your new design.
When you have picked out all your materials you can get started. Choose a clear work space, preferably one that has great lighting so you can see the smaller pieces. You can start out by making a simple charm and work your way up to a string of multicolored crystal beads in an intricate pattern. As your jewelry design blossoms be sure to purchase a great box to keep everything in.
As you become familiar with the process of making your own jewelry you can work your way up to soldering metals and shaping your own beads. Make jewelry for your wedding or the wedding of a soon to be sister-in-law. At the moment you are working on a necklace but earrings are close behind. Practice over the summer and by the holidays you will be making custom jewelry for everyone on your list.
With a few simple materials and some beautiful crystal beads you will be able to create a one of a kind piece that is perfectly suited to you!

Layers of Bling
This summer, layering isn’t just for clothes and cakes. Jewelry industry experts cite multiple layers of necklaces, bracelets and rings as one of the season’s hottest trends. Movement is also key this summer. From dangling chandelier earrings to chunky necklaces with layers of bouncy trinkets, to cuff bracelets dotted with shimmering faux pearls or colored glass, jewelry that moves with you is totally on-trend. There’s nothing more gorgeous than the sun hitting glimmering baubles as you walk or move your hands and head while talking.

From dressing up to business attire to going completely casual, this season’s jewelry is designed to draw the right kind of attention. Add sparkle to glamorous outfits or throw an unexpectedly flashy element into a subdued ensemble.
Whether you’re headed for a big night out or going to the grocery store, your look can always use a little something extra. You won’t have to break the bank, but you may have to get used to a little more attention than usual.

English: Pearls (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Pearls have been classed as precious items for thousands of years and have been worn as adornments by people from all over the world.
Today, pearls are still adored as they have always been and have recently become fashionable amongst the ‘hip and trendy’ set too.
How is a pearl made?
One of the reasons why natural pearls are so coveted is that they are very rare. They are formed when a piece of grit within an oyster or other mollusc becomes covered in calcium carbonate which builds up around the grit in layers, forming a cylindrical shape.
The most desired pearls are perfectly round but other shapes do exist and sometimes the rarity of the shape adds to the value of the gem, for example the famous teardrop shaped Peregrina pearl. Cultured pearls are less valuable but just as beautiful and are formed when a piece of grit is implanted within a mollusc.
How is a pearl’s value measured?
When valuing a pearl several factors are considered. These include the size and shape of the pearly, the weight and the quality of the lustre. Different coloured pearls also have differing values, with white pearls generally being worth more whereas black and yellow pearls are not as valuable.
Imitation pearls can be manufactured from various materials including glass, lacquer, plastic and mother of pearl. Although experts can easily tell the difference between a genuine pearl and an imitation, to the untrained eye one pearl looks pretty much like another but it’s generally believed that glass pearls tend to look the best.
How can I tell a genuine pearl from an imitation pearl?
There are several tests that you can carry out on pearl jewellery to ascertain whether the pearls are genuine or fake.
You can rub the pearl along the bottom edge of your tooth. If the pearl has a sandy or gritty texture then it is most probably real whereas if it is completely smooth then it is likely to be a fake.
You can also tell how gritty or sandy the surface of a pearl is by rubbing tow pearls together.
However, if you want to be one hundred percent sure whether a pearl is real or not then the best thing to do is take it to a dealer who will look at the surface of the pearl under magnification.
A real pearl will look almost maze like when magnified whereas a fake pearl will appear to have a textured and uneven surface.
